Amici e amiche di Tre Libri Sopra il Cielo, il 22 agosto 1980 usciva I’m Coming Out, il singolo della cantante statunitense Diana Ross, secondo estratto dal decimo album in studio, Diana. Scritto e prodotto da Bernard Edwards e Nile Rodgers, entrambi all’epoca membri del gruppo Chic, il brano parla di sessualità e di uscire allo scoperto e ad oggi I’m Coming Out è uno degli inni più conosciuti dalla comunità LGBTQ+.

In una recente intervista Nile Rodgers ha raccontato com’è nata la canzone e di come Diana Ross all’epoca non aveva capito il reale significato del brano:

“All’epoca Diana non aveva capito che I’m Coming Out parlasse di sessualità e di uscire allo scoperto. Ho avuto l’ispirazione per il brano dopo aver visto un impersonator di Diana Ross in un club transgender di Manhattan. Sono uscito, ho chiamato Bernard Edwards e gli ho detto: “Scrivi I’m Coming Out”. Diana impazzì anche se non capì il reale significato della canzone. Era la prima volta in cui io e Bernards lavoravamo con una star di tale portata”.

 

Nel 2003 la cantante statunitense Amerie pubblica una cover della canzone, realizzata per la colonna sonora del film Un amore a 5 stelle, mentre un sample della canzone è stato utilizzato nel brano Mo Money Mo Problems del rapper statunitense The Notorius B.I.G. del 1997.
